SOE Minister Erick Thohir revealed three strategies to improve the performance of PT Perkebunan Nusantara III (Persero) Holding or PTPN III. The three strategies are part of the restructuring so that PTPN III does not collapse.
“I also appreciate the breakthroughs that will be made. There are three, this is part of the restructuring. We don’t want this company to collapse, agree?” said Erick at the Nusakita Launching & Branding event, Tuesday (17/8/2021).
He said, first, his party wanted to spur the performance of palm oil. He ensured that PTPN’s palm oil became a benchmark for the private sector.
“How about our palm oil, we will make sure we can benchmark it with the private sector. We can also go public so that there will be an even bigger economy,” he said.
Second, related to the formation of a sugar company (sugar co). This is an effort to achieve self-sufficiency in sugar consumption.
“The formation of a sugar co today is in accordance with the target expected by the President, that we must return to the backbone of PTPN. Of course, we don’t leave the private sector behind, but our country should no longer be an import-import country in the next 5-6 years. instead of consuming sugar again,” he explained.
“This self-sufficiency is part of why in the last meeting, which was attended by the President, Coordinating Minister, Minister of Finance, Minister of Industry, Trade and Agriculture we received full support,” he continued.
Lastly, product repositioning at PTPN. Erick emphasized that PTPN should not be a competitor for farmers.
“From the beginning, I spoke to Mr. Ghani (President Director of PTPN III) for coffee, tea should not be a competitor to farmers. Why don’t we play premium, instead we encourage local farmers to become part of us, because we are the locomotive,” he said.
